According to Cnbc, Nissan Motor is considering increasing U.S. production as it prepares to launch the 2027 Rogue crossover and a new hybrid version. Christian Meunier, chairman of Nissan Americas, said the company is reaching its current U.S. production capacity and is optimistic a third shift could be added quickly following the Rogue hybrid’s launch.

Nissan builds the Rogue alongside other Nissan and Infiniti crossovers at its 6 million-square-foot assembly plant in Smyrna, Tennessee, which currently operates two production shifts. The company also has a manufacturing plant in Canton, Mississippi, producing the Nissan Altima sedan and Frontier midsize pickup truck. Additional shifts at assembly plants typically mean hundreds, if not thousands, of new jobs.

Production of the 2027 Rogue with a traditional gasoline engine is expected to begin at the Tennessee plant in the spring. U.S. manufacturing of the hybrid is expected to start next year. Until then, Nissan plans to import hybrid vehicles from Japan to bring them to market more quickly, support sales and aid its global turnaround plan.

The new Rogue e-Power uses a series-hybrid system in which the engine works as a generator for electric motors that propel the vehicle. Nissan said the model will deliver 38 miles per gallon combined and will start at $35,490, rising to $43,490 for a Platinum version. Meunier said Nissan plans to position the Rogue e-Power against the Toyota RAV4.

If Nissan adds a third shift at each of its assembly plants, Meunier said U.S. production could rise to roughly 1 million units annually from nearly 487,000 in 2025. Nissan targets producing 80% of the vehicles it sells in the U.S. domestically by 2030, although it has no current plans for a new plant.
