Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, has been hospitalized following a significant decline in her health. This transfer from prison to a medical facility occurred after she experienced two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and a severe cardiac crisis, as reported by her foundation on Friday. According to Al Jazeera, the prison doctors concluded that her condition could not be managed adequately within the prison environment.

The Narges Mohammadi Foundation indicated that the transfer was deemed necessary due to the specialized medical care that Mohammadi requires. Earlier that day, she fainted twice while incarcerated in Zanjan, located in northwestern Iran. Reports from her lawyers suggest that she may have suffered a heart attack in late March, which left her in a weakened state, requiring assistance for basic mobility.

Mohammadi, aged 53, has been imprisoned since December 12, 2022, following her arrest during a visit to Mashhad. In February, she was sentenced to over seven years in prison, with six of those years linked to charges of “gathering and collusion to commit crimes.” Her family has raised concerns regarding her deteriorating health, attributing some of her condition to an alleged beating she sustained during her arrest.

The Nobel committee has publicly condemned what it describes as the “ongoing life-threatening mistreatment” of Mohammadi, although the Iranian government has not issued any comments regarding the allegations of abuse. Prior to her latest imprisonment, she was already serving a lengthy sentence for charges related to state security and propaganda, but had been released on medical furlough since late 2024.
