Former members of Australia’s 1976 Olympic swimming team gathered at the North Sydney Olympic Pool to mark a 50-year reunion and return to the venue that helped shape their careers.

According to ABC News, the harbourside pool was a training ground between 1953 and 1978, during which 86 world records were set, and the 1976 team went on to collectively hold numerous world records.

Originally built in 1938, the pool has undergone a major redevelopment. It closed in February 2021 and the renovation began as a $28 million project before growing to $58 million and ultimately reaching a $122 million price tag.

Several former Olympians reflected on the venue’s role in their careers. Graham Windeatt said he had “fond memories” of the refurbished pool and recalled setting a world record for the 880m freestyle there in 1971, calling that achievement “very groundbreaking and it hasn’t happened since.” Judy Hudson, who competed at Montreal as a 17-year-old, said the pool was where she “swam the best in her career” and described it as one of her favourites. Max Metzker, who was 16 at the Montreal Olympics, said his teammates helped ground him during the excitement of the Games and that “I haven’t seen some of these people for 50 years, so there’s definitely a bonding and camaraderie amongst us.”

What happens next: after its closure in February 2021, the public will again get access to the facilities in August.
