According to ABC News, One Nation’s Luke Herdegen has won the Secret Harbour by-election in Perth’s south, recording a major swing against Labor in a seat the party had held for decades. The contest was triggered by former MP Paul Papalia’s retirement to care for a sick family member.

WA Premier Roger Cook said Labor would listen to the outcome, describing it as a reminder that Western Australians were doing it tough. He said the government needed to meet people where they were and ensure community values were reflected in its work.

The campaign covered issues ranging from red-bin collection frequency to the standing of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and One Nation leader Pauline Hanson. Labor is understood to have spent about $400,000, including social-media material and more than 200,000 pieces of mail. Labor candidate Georgia Tree formally conceded on Sunday morning and congratulated Mr Herdegen.

Mr Herdegen said the result was a loss for Labor rather than Ms Tree personally, and called Secret Harbour “One Nation heartland now”. He said residents in outer-southern suburbs felt neglected and had sent a message to Canberra. His first priority, he said, would be seeking the return of weekly bin collections, after they were changed to fortnightly with the rollout of FOGO bins.

Federal Labor figures and Liberal representatives said their parties should examine the result. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese warned of “hard-right populists” while not directly addressing the by-election loss. WA Liberal leader Basil Zempilas rejected claims of a weak campaign, saying One Nation would not have won without Liberal voters directing preferences to the minor party.
