According to The Guardian, One Nation candidate Luke Herdegen claimed victory in the Secret Harbour state byelection in Western Australia. With 74.5% of votes counted on Sunday morning, Herdegen was leading Labor candidate Georgia Tree 57-42 after preferences.

The byelection in the beachside electorate south of Perth was triggered by the midterm retirement of senior Labor minister Paul Papalia. One Nation’s Western Australia leader, Rod Caddies, claimed victory at 9:30pm local time, saying the result showed there were no safe Labor seats in the state or country any more.

Federal One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce said the outcome showed the party could turn strong polling into votes. He said some former Labor voters found it easy to move to One Nation. Party leader Pauline Hanson said on X that One Nation would continue targeting Labor-held seats and that voters were choosing it as a serious alternative.

Federal cabinet minister Pat Conroy described it as a tough day for WA Labor but cautioned against applying lessons from a single state byelection to national politics. The Liberal party finished a distant third, with a 17% primary vote. Federal Liberal frontbencher Jonno Duniam called that result poor and said the party needed to work to regain votes and restore trust.

Cost-of-living pressures, housing and a perceived lack of community amenities were leading concerns for voters in Secret Harbour. Herdegen said the campaign’s vibe had been strong for the previous six weeks, while WA Premier Roger Cook said it would be a battle to retain the outer-suburban mortgage-belt electorate.
