Police are investigating the distribution of flyers across various Perth suburbs targeting members of the LGBTQIA+ community. The flyers include photos and names of individuals, alongside sometimes explicit text accusing them of crimes such as paedophilia. According to ABC News, these materials have raised significant alarm among the community.

One notable victim is Gregory Helleren, who is the co-chair of the City of Perth’s LGBTIQA+ Advisory Group and a board member at Pride WA. His image was used in one of the flyers, and he reported the incident to police but was met with confusion when officers later visited his home to ask him to deny the allegations made in the flyer. Helleren expressed his distress over the situation, stating that he felt disturbed by the false accusations being circulated.

The flyers have been described as potentially criminal by WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch, who indicated that those responsible for creating or distributing them could face both criminal charges and civil lawsuits. He emphasized the importance of reporting such incidents to the police for further investigation.

In response to these events, the City of Perth’s LGBTQIA+ Advisory Group plans to advocate for tougher anti-vilification protections through a letter to the WA Attorney General. This initiative reflects a growing concern among community leaders about the implications of such hate speech and the need for stronger legal protections against it.

The distribution of these flyers has been characterized by LGBTQIA+ advocates as a troubling reminder of the challenges still faced by the community, despite progress in societal acceptance. Graeme Watson, editor of LGBTQIA+ publication OUTinPerth, noted that the flyers serve as a wake-up call, highlighting that there is still work to be done in combating homophobia and ensuring the safety of LGBTQIA+ individuals.
