Margaret Greenslade, a trailblazing driving instructor in South Australia, is remembered for her significant contributions to the community and her role in shaping the lives of many drivers. According to ABC News, Greenslade, who passed away at the age of 96 in February this year, is believed to be one of the first licensed female driving instructors in the state, having received her license in 1963.

Her son, John Greenslade, reflected on her pioneering spirit, noting that his mother taught a generation of drivers in the Riverland region. He speculated that she was possibly the first woman to hold such a license, emphasizing her role as a trailblazer in a predominantly male field. Margaret’s journey began after she successfully completed a two-hour written exam and a practical driving test in Adelaide.

Beyond teaching driving, Margaret was known for her dedication to helping migrant families settle in the Riverland during the late 60s and 70s. She not only taught them to drive but also assisted them in navigating government services and health authorities, showcasing her commitment to community service.

Heather Saunders, chief executive of Women Can Australia, highlighted the importance of Greenslade’s legacy, stating that her unique approach provided women, especially those from diverse backgrounds, with a safe learning environment. Saunders noted the ongoing need for more female driving instructors to continue breaking barriers in the industry.

Margaret’s influence extended beyond driving instruction; she was an active community member, serving on school councils and volunteering with Meals on Wheels for over a decade. Her advocacy for women’s rights and representation in the workforce during the 1960s further cemented her legacy as a remarkable figure in her community. John fondly recalled that Margaret viewed her work as a service rather than a business, reflecting her selfless nature and dedication to helping others.
