According to The Guardian, Nithya Raman defeated incumbent Karen Bass to become Los Angeles’s next mayor, capping an election in which Democratic Socialists of America–Los Angeles-backed candidates won offices across the city and county. Raman, the first democratic socialist elected to the Los Angeles city council, will lead one of America’s two largest cities now governed by democratic socialist mayors.

Los Angeles voters also elected DSA-LA-endorsed Marissa Roy as city attorney and Angela Gonzales-Torres to a US House seat over incumbent Jimmy Gomez. Other members won school-board and Burbank city-council seats. DSA-LA said Burbank now has the west coast’s first socialist-majority city council. The chapter described the results as its largest-ever slate of candidate victories after volunteers knocked on more than 110,000 doors.

Roy won 67.39% of the vote in the city attorney contest, according to the latest available data cited by the Guardian. Gonzales-Torres received 60.6%, compared with Gomez’s 39.4%, in the most recently available figures. Gomez had represented the district in Congress for nearly a decade and was backed by Aipac, which spent $2.7m supporting his candidacy.

Raman’s campaign benefited from a large volunteer network, while Bass’s unpopularity and criticism of her handling of the Palisades fire also shaped the race, the report said. DSA-LA had more than 6,000 members as of last month and said another 2,000 joined this week. Once in office, Raman said she would work to earn the trust of Bass voters and non-voters while pursuing affordable housing, parks, transit, safety for working people and families, and a city government capable of delivering on its promises.
