Arabic version: ت clash بين حزب الإصلاح والأخضر في انتخابات جورتون ودنتون الفرعية
The Gorton and Denton constituency is witnessing a fierce contest as the Reform and Green parties vie for a crucial Labour seat in the upcoming by-election on 26 February. According to Middle East Eye, this election follows Labour Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent challenges, including the departure of his chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, and ally Peter Mandelson due to an Epstein-related scandal.
Reform UK has established its campaign headquarters in a large warehouse at the Malbern Industrial Estate in Denton, marked by a prominent poster featuring party leader Nigel Farage and local candidate Matt Goodwin. Goodwin, a former academic and now a GB News presenter, is attempting to capitalize on the party’s recent polling success as Labour struggles with internal issues.
The constituency is demographically diverse, with Gorton being more ethnically varied, while Denton has a predominantly white working-class population. Historically loyal to Labour, the area has seen increasing support for the right-wing Reform party, which is now challenging Labour’s long-standing dominance.
The by-election was triggered by the resignation of the Labour MP due to ill health, making it a significant test for Labour and a potential referendum on Starmer’s leadership. The Labour Party’s decision to block Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham from standing for the seat has further complicated the situation, as the party faces backlash from its own ranks.
With approximately 76,000 potential voters, the outcome will also reflect the rising influence of the Green Party, which has gained traction among younger voters. Reform candidate Goodwin’s controversial remarks regarding ethnicity and integration may affect voter sentiment, especially in a constituency where 44 percent of residents belong to ethnic minorities. Campaigning efforts are visible, with Reform volunteers actively distributing leaflets, while Green signs dominate parts of the diverse Levenshulme area.
