According to Cnbc, Salesforce’s recent earnings have renewed an argument that proprietary enterprise data, rather than frontier AI models, could become a critical source of value in the AI economy. The CNBC op-ed argues that as models become more capable, cheaper and increasingly interchangeable, companies with trusted data may hold a stronger competitive position.

The authors point to Salesforce’s role as a major repository of enterprise customer information. They argue that AI agents need reliable systems in which to research customers, record interactions, store contracts and tailor terms. Wells Fargo analysts were cited as saying, “Lower cost of intelligence increases value of incumbent data.”

Salesforce said its Data 360 platform ingested 104 trillion customer records during the quarter, up 355% from a year earlier. It also delivered 3.2 billion units of agentic work, nearly double the previous quarter. Combined AI and data annual recurring revenue reached $3.9 billion, more than tripling in one year, while Agentforce annual recurring revenue rose from $100 million to more than $1.5 billion within 18 months of its launch, up 240% year over year.

The op-ed also cited Salesforce’s financial results: revenue grew 11% to $11.35 billion, non-GAAP operating margins reached 34.1%, and adjusted earnings were $5.90 per share. Current remaining performance obligation increased 14%, and management raised full-year guidance to as much as $46.4 billion. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said nine of the top 10 AI companies use Salesforce and Slack, with their combined spending up 435% year over year. The authors conclude that software companies with valuable proprietary data, customer stickiness, strong cash flow and limited leverage may be better positioned for the AI transition.
