According to ABC News, Sam Pang won the Gold Logie at the 66th TV Week Logie Awards after hosting the ceremony for three consecutive years. Pang said he grew up watching television with his parents and never expected to appear on screen. The comedian, who appears on Have You Been Paying Attention, The Front Bar, Ground Up on the ABC and Sam Pang Tonight, is the second person of colour to win the award after Waleed Aly in 2016.

Magda Szubanski presented Pang with the prize while in character as Sharon Strzelecki from Kath & Kim, which viewers voted Australia’s most popular television program. Szubanski is in remission after revealing a stage 4 cancer diagnosis last year. Robert Irwin, 22, hosted the awards and opened after a skit and a dance display drawing on his winning stint on the US version of Dancing with the Stars last year. Irwin also won the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter for I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!.

Andrew Denton was inducted into the Hall of Fame by Amanda Keller and received a standing ovation. The former host of ABC TV’s Enough Rope has fostered talent through programs including The Chaser, Gruen and Hungry Beast. In his speech, Denton urged people to back themselves, praise rivals, prepare to fail and open doors for others. Deborah Mailman also entered the Hall of Fame, becoming the first Indigenous person to receive the honour. She dedicated the award to her parents and reacted warmly to a recorded message from her former drama teacher, Denise Murphy.

Sam Neill, who died last month aged 78, was posthumously named Best Lead Actor in a Drama for The Twelve: Cape Rock Killer. Heather Mitchell accepted on his behalf and said the series meant a great deal to him. The ABC collected eight awards, including Best Factual or Documentary Program for The Assembly. Lila McGuire won the Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent for Goolagong, which also won Best Miniseries or Telemovie, while Muster Dogs received Best Structured Reality Program.
