According to BBC News, Scotland drew 0-0 with Slovenia in Sebastien Pocognoli’s first match as head coach, producing a disjointed first half before taking control after the interval. Scotland had no shot on target before the break and did not touch the ball in Slovenia’s penalty area until the 38th minute.

The visitors improved significantly in the second half after Pocognoli adjusted the positioning of Oli McBurnie and Billy Gilmour. McBurnie dropped into a deeper role behind Robbie Ure and later Kieron Bowie, while Gilmour sat lower in midfield and was able to dictate play. Pocognoli described the performance as “two games in one game”.

Scotland created a series of chances but could not find a goal. McBurnie failed to convert a one-on-one with goalkeeper Jan Oblak, while Ure hit a post and Bowie missed a notable opportunity after being played in by Gilmour. McBurnie also saw efforts saved or go over, Aaron Hickey headed just wide, and Oblak was described as Slovenia’s best player.

All 10 of Scotland’s starting outfield players had a shot, the first time that had happened since the match against Armenia in June 2022. Scotland recorded 17 attempts, their highest total in a competitive game for more than 14 years, but have now failed to score in three tournament games in a row for the first time in almost 22 years.

Scotland next face Switzerland at Hampden on Tuesday night. Switzerland are ranked 14th in the world and are coached by Murat Yakin.
