According to ABC News, Queensland authorities have issued an Emergency Warning and a Seek Shelter Now alert for a very dangerous bushfire in Teelah, a rural area north of Blackbutt in the South Burnett.
The Queensland Fire Department said the fire was burning near Stretton Drive and that homes could be at risk. Residents on Stretton Drive and Scott Close were urged to seek shelter. A separate Prepare to Leave warning was issued for people between Old Esk Road and Wild Deer Drive.
Fire authorities advised residents to shelter in a room with more than one exit if the fire is close to their home. They said people should close windows, doors and vents, seal gaps with wet towels and watch for spot fires that could affect homes before the main fire front. As the front passes, residents were told to stay as low as possible and cover themselves with a blanket.
South Burnett Mayor Kathy Duff said the council was working with the QFD and planned to establish evacuation centres. She urged people in Teelah to monitor the Queensland Fire Department website and follow official instructions.
Further south, six rural homes were evacuated overnight during a bushfire near Murphy Crossing Road at Nundubbermere, south-west of Stanthorpe. Rural Fire Service Queensland Chief Superintendent Shaun Toohey said the fire was likely caused by a permitted burn that jumped containment lines several weeks earlier. Emergency crews continue to monitor the blaze, with no property damage reported.
