According to The Guardian, New South Wales opposition leader Kellie Sloane has written to prime minister Anthony Albanese urging action on violent pornography after a 16-year-old girl died in a suspected sexual strangulation incident.

Sloane said reports of the death were shocking and had “rocked everyone to their core”. She said action should not be delayed, telling Albanese: “after the shock of the last week, that let’s act now, let’s not wait any longer.”

The NSW Liberal leader said certain forms of pornography should be put in the most restricted category. She also called for pressure on pornography companies and social media platforms to ensure content could be blocked.

Sloane said violent material could affect young and vulnerable people whose first sexual experiences were being distorted. “Kids at 16, this is shocking. And it’s becoming normalised,” she said.

She said consent education was another critical part of the response, while acknowledging discussions between parents and teenagers could be difficult. Sloane also said the NSW Liberals supported Chanel Contos’ Fix Our Feeds campaign, which calls for an opt-in mechanism for algorithms. She said algorithms could feed increasingly misogynistic content to young boys and exploit girls’ vulnerabilities around appearance and self-worth.
