The Transitional National Legislative Assembly has summoned the ministers of interior and defence, along with the governor of Warrap State, to address the worsening security situation in the Greater Tonj area, lawmakers said on Wednesday.
The summons followed an urgent motion introduced by Warrap lawmaker Kornelio Mawien Dhor, who told parliament that escalating violence in July had claimed hundreds of lives and left local communities living in fear.
Mawien said intercommunal clashes, cattle raids and revenge attacks had become increasingly frequent across the area, weakening public security and undermining the rule of law.
He added that the widespread possession of firearms among civilians had further intensified the crisis.
Parliament Speaker Ambrose Lomin postponed debate on the motion until the summoned officials appear before lawmakers to respond to the concerns raised.
