A state funeral for AFL legend Neale Daniher is currently taking place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The event honors Daniher’s remarkable contributions as a motor neurone disease (MND) campaigner and his achievements as a former footballer and coach. Daniher passed away at his home in Melbourne on May 25, 2023, at the age of 65. According to ABC News, his family accepted the Victorian government’s offer for a state funeral, which has drawn a large crowd of mourners.
The service is attended by family, friends, and prominent figures from the AFL community, including Governor-General Margaret Gardner, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan. Sports broadcaster Hamish McLachlan is serving as the master of ceremonies, encouraging attendees to celebrate Daniher’s life and legacy rather than mourn his passing.
Daniher played 82 games for Essendon from 1979 to 1990 and later coached the Melbourne Football Club from 1998 to 2007. He guided the Demons to a grand final appearance in 2000. After his MND diagnosis in 2013, Daniher dedicated himself to raising awareness and funds for MND research, establishing the FightMND charity. The charity’s flagship event, the Big Freeze, has raised millions of dollars for research and treatment.
This year’s Big Freeze event, held just days before his funeral, set a record for fundraising. The Daniher family has requested that donations be made to FightMND in lieu of flowers. To date, the charity has contributed $141 million to medical research and treatment, underscoring Daniher’s significant impact in the fight against MND.
