Sydney’s Arabic-speaking community and lovers of classic Arab music are invited to attend a special cultural event celebrating one of the most influential voices in the history of Arabic music — Umm Kulthum, the “Star of the East.”

Presented by the Institute of the Development of Poetry and Heritage, the commemorative function will take place at NSW Parliament House in Sydney on Tuesday, 17 November 2026, bringing together members of the community for an afternoon dedicated to the extraordinary artistic and cultural legacy of the Egyptian icon.

Known affectionately across the Arab world as “Kawkab Al-Sharq” — the Star of the East, Umm Kulthum remains a towering figure in Arabic music decades after her passing. Her unmistakable voice, powerful performances and timeless songs continue to connect generations, with her influence extending well beyond Egypt to audiences throughout the Middle East and around the world.

The upcoming Sydney event provides an opportunity to celebrate that enduring legacy while also recognising the importance of preserving Arabic poetry, music and cultural heritage within Australia’s multicultural society.

Holding the function at NSW Parliament House adds particular significance to the occasion, highlighting the contribution of Arab culture and heritage to Australia’s diverse community.

For older generations, the event is an opportunity to revisit the music and memories that accompanied much of their lives. For younger Australians of Arab heritage, it offers a chance to discover or reconnect with an artist whose work helped shape modern Arabic music and cultural identity.

Members of the broader Australian community who have an interest in world music, poetry, history and multicultural heritage are also encouraged to attend and experience a celebration of one of the Arab world’s most recognised cultural figures.
