Austin Appelbee reunited with the rescuers who saved his family in WA’s South West. The 13-year-old swam four kilometres to get help for his mother and siblings after they were swept out to sea during a holiday in Quindalup, about 250 kilometres south of Perth. The family encountered difficulties while using rented kayaks and paddleboards in rough swells, prompting a dramatic rescue effort.
According to ABC News, Austin’s swim to shore was just the beginning. After reaching land, he ran another two kilometres to make a crucial Triple Zero (000) call for help. A month later, the Appelbee family returned to thank the Naturaliste Marine Rescue volunteers, police, and St John ambulance crews who participated in their rescue.
During the reunion, Austin expressed gratitude but insisted he was not a hero, instead highlighting the bravery of his mother, Joanne, and his siblings, Beau and Grace, who supported each other during their ordeal. Joanne spent eight hours trying to keep her children safe as they drifted in the ocean, demonstrating remarkable resilience in a dire situation.
Beau Appelbee shared his emotions about returning to the rescue site, feeling thankful for the efforts of those who found them. He acknowledged the struggles the family faced since the incident, including physical and mental challenges.
Joanne Appelbee reflected on the overwhelming global attention their story received, expressing deep gratitude for the rescuers. She noted that she had lost hope during their time at sea but was thankful for the outcome. The family’s story resonated widely, drawing praise for their courage and the actions taken during the crisis.
The rescuers also expressed joy at seeing the family safe and well, emphasizing the collective effort that led to their successful rescue. Paul Bresland from Naturaliste Marine Rescue remarked on the significance of the day, while Peter Taylor highlighted the outstanding teamwork among all involved in the rescue operation.
