According to ABC News, two teenage boys have been charged after allegedly entering an enclosure at Perth Zoo and striking a saltwater crocodile with a metal pole. The boys, aged 16 and 17, appeared in the Perth Children’s Court after the alleged incident involving Dangalagabba, a 4.2-metre, 400-kilogram crocodile.

Police allege the pair entered the closed South Perth zoo at about 7:15pm on Sunday and cut locks to access the crocodile area. The court heard they banged on the saltwater crocodile enclosure wall, causing the animal to lunge, then removed cameras after covering their faces.

Prosecutors alleged one boy entered the enclosure and hit the crocodile with a metal pole while the other held a torch. Both were later seen on CCTV riding staff pushbikes around the zoo. Police located the teenagers at separate addresses in Baldivis and Belmont on Monday.

Each boy faces two charges of criminal damage or destruction of property, as well as one count each of trespass and animal cruelty. One was granted bail and is due back in court on October 6, while the other was remanded in custody until a bail application hearing on September 18.

Perth Zoo said Dangalagabba sustained minor superficial injuries and was recovering well under veterinary monitoring. A spokesperson said the zoo was deeply disappointed, warning that unlawful entry into animal habitats risks both animal welfare and personal safety. The zoo is reviewing the incident.
