A 19-year-old police officer has died from injuries sustained in a crash while responding to a separate collision in Cramlington. According to BBC News, Jess Turnbull joined Northumbria Police in September last year and was noted for her dedication to service.
Turnbull was dispatched to the scene of a crash involving a Land Rover Freelander and a Ford Explorer on the A189 Spine Road at approximately 23:10 BST on Monday. While attending to this incident, a black Mercedes collided with her marked police car, leading to her fatal injuries. She passed away in the hospital on Wednesday.
A 73-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has since been released on bail. Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine expressed condolences, stating that Turnbull had a promising career ahead of her and emphasized the daily risks faced by police officers in their duty to protect the public.
The Northumbria Police Federation has also paid tribute, highlighting Turnbull’s impact on her colleagues through her professionalism and willingness to assist others. Chairman Nick Munnelly noted the profound effect this tragedy would have on those who worked with her.
In light of the incident, the police force has requested that individuals wishing to pay their respects refrain from leaving tributes at the crash site and instead direct their condolences to Northumbria Police’s Wallsend headquarters.
