Arabic version: تصادم قطارين بالقرب من جاكرتا يسفر عن أربع وفيات وإصابة العديد
At least four people were killed and dozens injured when two trains collided outside the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Monday. According to BBC News, a stationary commuter train was hit from behind by a long-distance commuter train arriving on the same track.
Rescue efforts are currently underway to free passengers trapped in the wreckage. Footage from local media shows injured individuals on medical trolleys near Bekasi Timur Station, with rescuers actively working to assist those still inside the damaged carriages.
Anne Purba, a spokesperson for state-owned railway operator KAI, confirmed the four fatalities and reported that 38 other people had been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Purba expressed condolences to the victims and their families.
The Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, visited the crash site and indicated that the death toll could potentially rise. Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene, with passengers reportedly screaming as the trains collided.
Jakarta Police Chief Insp Gen Asep Edi Suheri noted that six or seven people remained trapped inside the carriages. The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns within Indonesia’s public transport network, which suffers from a high accident rate attributed to ageing infrastructure and poor maintenance.
