According to Cnbc, longer-dated U.S. government bond yields moved higher on Friday as concerns over the Treasury Department’s extended debt repurchase program and rising national debt continued to weigh on markets. The 30-year Treasury yield, a target of the buyback plan, rose by more than 3 basis points to 5.273%, compared with 5.21% a week earlier.
The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield, which influences borrowing costs for mortgages, auto loans and credit card debt, also climbed more than 3 basis points to 4.734%. It had fallen as low as 4.63% last Friday. The two-year Treasury note yield, which more closely follows expectations for short-term Federal Reserve rates, rose more than 4 basis points to 4.232%, from about 4.10% a week earlier.
Borrowing costs had already rebounded sharply on Thursday, when yields on both the 10-year note and 30-year bond increased by more than 5 basis points. The moves erased the 10-year yield’s decline from Wednesday, when Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent increased repurchases in the government bond market in an effort to ease pressure at the long end of the yield curve. Bond yields and prices move inversely, and one basis point equals 0.01%.
Traders are looking to Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh’s upcoming speech at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium for indications on longer-term yields and central bank independence. Paul Stanley, Arca managing director and founding advisor, said markets need more clarity on the central bank’s plans. Traders will also receive the latest personal consumption expenditures price index reading next Wednesday.
