According to Cnbc, President Donald Trump signed three proclamations imposing additional 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, citing alleged trade discrimination against U.S. products and industries. Senior Trump administration officials said the actions were signed Monday.

The tariffs target separate sets of Canadian imports and are intended to address areas in which the United States says it has faced discrimination. An administration official said the measures would level the playing field for American exports including motor vehicles, alcohol and dairy.

Different proclamations cover Canadian products “ranging from wine to hockey sticks to cement,” an official said. The tariffs are scheduled to take effect 30 days after the signings.

The actions use Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, a rarely used authority that allows a president to impose tariffs of up to 50% on goods from countries found to be discriminating against the United States. A 2016 article by Covington and Burling LLP said the authority had gone unused for decades and found no public record relating to Section 338 since 1949.

Officials said the new tariffs are not related to wildfires in northwestern Ontario, which have caused air-pollution issues across parts of the United States. They added that Trump has asked for options on that issue. The Canadian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
