Arabic version: ترامب يحافظ على وقف إطلاق النار بين الولايات المتحدة وإيران على الرغم من الاشتباكات في مضيق هرمز
US President Donald Trump stated that a ceasefire between the US and Iran remains in effect following an exchange of fire in the Strait of Hormuz late Thursday night. The origin of the conflict is unclear, with both nations accusing each other of initiating hostilities. Iran’s military claimed that the US targeted its vessels, while the US responded to what it termed Iranian attacks on Navy destroyers with defensive strikes. According to BBC News, Trump remarked that Iran had ‘trifled’ with the US during this incident.
Initial reports from Iranian state media indicated explosions in the Strait, framing the situation as an exchange of fire with the ‘enemy.’ In response, Iran’s military reported that US aerial attacks had struck the coasts of Bandar Khamir, Sirik, and Qeshm Island, leading to retaliatory actions against US military vessels. The US Central Command described the Iranian actions as ‘unprovoked’ and stated that it had neutralized incoming threats while targeting Iranian military facilities.
Trump, in a social media post, claimed significant damage was inflicted on Iranian forces and issued warnings about potential future escalations if a peace deal is not reached promptly. The situation escalated despite ongoing discussions regarding a US proposal for a ceasefire, which Iran’s foreign ministry had indicated was under consideration.
While both nations have threatened further violence if their demands for a peace agreement are not met, recent commentary from Iranian officials suggested skepticism about the viability of the proposed 14-point memorandum of understanding. As diplomatic efforts continue, the potential for a permanent ceasefire remains uncertain, with both sides poised for further military action if necessary.
