According to ABC News, two children suffered minor injuries after a police pursuit, collision and alleged carjacking across Sydney’s west. The children were taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital as a precaution.

Police had been called to Belmore to carry out a welfare check on a 36-year-old driver. NSW Police said a pursuit began after the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, continuing into Auburn before officers terminated it because of the manner of his driving.

Police said the man then drove on the wrong side of the M4 Motorway and struck an oncoming vehicle. He allegedly got out with the two children and attempted to steal another car.

A 25-year-old man who intervened suffered a stab wound to his hand during a scuffle. Police allege the driver then stole the vehicle of a woman who had stopped to help, placed the children in her car and drove westbound on the M4.

The man was arrested on the Cumberland Highway at Wentworthville by an off-duty police officer assisted by bystanders. He was taken to hospital under police guard, and police said they were still waiting to interview him while piecing together the incident.
