Arabic version: السياسيون الأمريكيون منقسمون حول هجوم ترامب على إيران
Politicians across the United States have responded to President Donald Trump’s military action against Iran, which was conducted in conjunction with Israel. The attacks have reportedly resulted in at least 201 fatalities, including more than 80 children at a school in southern Iran. According to Al Jazeera, Republicans are largely supportive, while Democrats express a lack of consensus.
Trump defended the military operation, stating that the objective is to eliminate threats from the Iranian regime. Republican leaders, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, praised the action as a necessary response to Iran’s nuclear ambitions and support for terrorism.
In contrast, Democratic leaders criticized the attack. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries emphasized the absence of Congressional authorization, while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for clarity regarding the threat level posed by Iran. Other Democrats, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, condemned the strikes as unlawful and dangerous, arguing that they could lead to further conflict.
Polls indicate a divided public opinion, with 33% of U.S. adults supporting the attack, while 45% disapproved. Approval among Democrats and Independents was notably low, at 10% and 21%, respectively. Republican support was significantly higher, with 68% in favor of the military action.
As the situation unfolds, fears of retaliation from Iran have risen, with reports of strikes targeting U.S. bases in the region. The ongoing conflict raises concerns about escalating violence and the potential for a broader war in the Middle East.
