According to BBC News, the United States is banning a range of Canadian products, including alcoholic spirits, dairy goods and motorbikes, as Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on American goods take effect. President Donald Trump set out the restrictions in executive orders on Tuesday, with the import ban due to begin on 29 September.

The White House said Canada was “discriminating” against US businesses by restricting American goods while not applying the same limits to products from other countries. Whey and non-alcoholic beer are among products banned entirely, while tariffs will rise further on goods including cheeses and motorboats.

The restrictions are the latest escalation in a months-long trade war. Last month, the White House imposed 50% tariffs on about $20bn (£14.8bn) of Canadian goods, affecting furniture, wine, sporting equipment and fishing equipment. Canada responded with dollar-for-dollar tariffs on US steel, clothing and furniture, which came into force after midnight on Tuesday.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said his country’s shift away from the US as its largest trading partner “will come at a cost”. He added: “There’s always a cost to action. But it doesn’t come close to the cost of standing still.” Although officials on both sides have said they want a trade deal, no new talks have been scheduled since negotiations collapsed in late August.

Economics lecturer Scott French said the measures target significant Canadian industries, including dairy, and warned that the dispute would be costly because of the North American economy’s historical integration. Trade expert Deborah Elms said the ban could strongly affect Canadian businesses with US buyers, though early estimates indicated a modest impact involving about $1bn worth of goods.
