US special forces launched a high-stakes raid into Iran on Sunday to rescue an injured airman left stranded in a remote mountainous region after his aircraft was shot down two days earlier. According to BBC News, the airman’s ordeal began when an F-15E Strike Eagle jet was shot down over southwestern Iran – the first incident of its kind in more than 20 years.

The downed aircraft resulted in two military personnel ejecting from the plane. While the pilot was rescued the same day, the weapons operator became separated and remained stranded in a sparsely populated, rugged region. As reports of a missing US airman spread, Iran offered a bounty of £50,000 ($66,100) for information leading to his recovery.

The airman, armed with a handgun, utilized training designed for such situations, including intermittently turning on a beacon signal to assist US forces in locating him. He concealed himself in a mountain crevice and limited the use of his beacon signal due to concerns it could be detected by Iranian forces. US officials confirmed that the CIA was able to trace the airman’s exact location and informed the Pentagon.

As US special forces prepared for the rescue, they launched strikes to prevent Iranian troops from approaching the area. Reports indicated that the airman communicated vital information about Iranian positions from his hiding spot, which helped facilitate the operation. The mission involved extensive air support, with President Trump stating that 155 aircraft were deployed, including four bombers, 64 fighters, 48 refueling tankers, and 13 rescue aircraft.

Despite challenges, including the destruction of two planes that became bogged down in soil, US forces successfully extracted the airman. He was later flown to Kuwait for medical treatment. Trump noted that while the airman was severely injured, he would be just fine. The operation has drawn mixed reactions, with Iranian officials claiming it was a failure and US analysts discussing the implications of the downed aircraft and the subsequent rescue efforts.
