Arabic version: الولايات المتحدة ستزيل سوريا من قائمة رعاة الإرهاب التحديات المستمرة
The Trump administration has announced plans to remove Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism. This decision comes a year and a half after the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime, as the transitional government under Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa seeks to reintegrate Syria into the international community. According to Al Jazeera, al-Sharaa has been actively visiting regional countries and the United States to foster diplomatic relations and alleviate Syria’s economic isolation.
In addition to the planned delisting, the U.S. has lifted some sanctions against Syria, marking a significant shift in its foreign policy approach towards the country. The designation of Syria as a state sponsor of terrorism has been in place since 1979, and its removal signals a potentially new chapter in U.S.-Syria relations.
Despite these developments, Syria continues to face substantial security challenges. Recently, twin attacks occurred in the capital, raising concerns about the stability of the region. Furthermore, Israel’s ongoing occupation of additional territory in southwestern Syria adds another layer of complexity to the situation.
As Syria navigates its path towards re-engagement with the world, the effectiveness of these diplomatic efforts remains to be seen, especially in light of the persistent security threats and regional pressures.
