Virginia voters have approved a redistricting measure that could hand Democrats control of the thinly-divided US House of Representatives in the midterm elections later this year. The ballot measure will redraw the state’s congressional map to help Democrats flip as many as four House seats held by Republicans. This change comes as part of a broader national trend of redistricting efforts following calls from former President Donald Trump for conservative states to reassess their voting maps.

According to BBC News, control of Congress will be decided in the November midterm elections, with the newly drawn districts playing a crucial role in the balance of power in the House of Representatives. Historically, the party of the current president would lose House seats during this congressional election, making this redistricting a pivotal moment for Democrats.

Currently, Democrats hold six out of Virginia’s eleven congressional seats. The updated map could allow them to hold up to ten. Democratic state House Speaker Don Scott remarked on social media that Virginia’s decision has changed the trajectory of the 2026 midterms, emphasizing the importance of this redistricting in leveling the political playing field.

The redistricting referendum is noted as the most expensive ballot measure in Virginia’s history, with over $80 million raised by various groups advocating for both sides of the issue. In response to the redistricting efforts, Trump expressed concerns about the implications of a Democratic majority in the House, labeling it a potential disaster.

This wave of redistricting is not isolated to Virginia; other states have also moved to alter their voting maps. Texas, for instance, has implemented changes that favor Republicans, while California voters approved new maps that provide Democrats with an advantage in several districts. As the midterm elections approach, the impact of these redistricting efforts will be closely watched as they may reshape the political landscape in the United States.
