In Armidale, New South Wales, 12-year-old Annabelle Arkit is making a significant impact in her community by offering free dance classes. The initiative, known as Revelations Dance, aims to provide access to dance for children who might otherwise be unable to afford it. According to ABC News, the classes have become a vital resource for families facing financial strain.

Annabelle, who is an accomplished dancer herself, has performed in national competitions and represented Australia at the Dance World Cup in Prague, in the Czech Republic, at the age of 10. Inspired by her own journey, she decided to give back to her community by running these classes. “Lots of people can’t afford to dance. And it’s sad,” she expressed, recognizing the barriers many face in accessing extracurricular activities.

The classes, held weekly at St Mark’s UNEchurch, have grown from just three students to over 20 participants aged between nine and 19. While the classes are free, families are asked to contribute between $50 and $80 per term for costumes required for competitions and showcases.

The impact of the program extends beyond just dance. Students report increased confidence and a sense of community. Beatrix Hopf, a 16-year-old dancer, noted, “It definitely boosts confidence, we all build each other up, and I really love that.” Annabelle’s mother, Danielle, who helps run the classes, highlighted the diverse backgrounds of the students, including those in foster care.

As the Revelations Dance team prepares for upcoming competitions, including the 2026 Showcase Australian National Dance Championships, Annabelle’s leadership continues to inspire her peers. She recently achieved first place (National Champion) for her Broadway routine and celebrated her student Sofie’s success as well, marking a promising future for the young dancers of Armidale.
