Arabic version: عرض أول لفيلم كوميدي رومانسي من الأمم الأولى في مهرجان سيدني السينمائي
Maŋutji (Catching Eyes), a short film showcasing a love story from Arnhem Land, has made its debut at the Sydney Film Festival. The romantic comedy features model Cindy Rostron and first-time actor Denzel Marika in lead roles, portraying young lovers Muthali and Rakay. According to ABC News, the film was shot in the Arnhem Land community of Yirrkala and is part of a collection of five films highlighting First Nations narratives about love.
Written and directed by Siena Mayutu Wurmarri Stubbs, Maŋutji explores themes of perception in romance, likening it to a spectator sport. Stubbs emphasizes the importance of community acknowledgment in relationships, particularly through the Yolŋu kinship system. The film’s title, which means ‘catching eyes’ in Yolŋu-Matha, reflects its focus on the nuances of attraction and love.
The film pays homage to Shakespeare’s classic tale of love and conflict, Romeo and Juliet, with a specific nod to the iconic fish tank scene from Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation. Producer Libby Collins expressed enthusiasm about the casting of Rostron and Marika, noting their impressive performances and quick adaptation to the Yolŋu-Matha language.
Maŋutji is among five short films that received $152,000 each in funding from Screen Australia and other organizations, aimed at promoting First Nations storytelling. The film is also competing for awards at the festival, including best live action short and best First Nations film. Collins highlighted the significance of filming in Yirrkala, stating that it captures authentic local experiences and stories.
