Arabic version: إيران تؤسس مجلساً مؤقتاً بعد وفاة خامنئي
Iran’s leadership transition is set to commence following the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Security chief Ali Larijani announced that an interim leadership council will be established to oversee state functions until a new leader is elected. The council will include the president, the head of the judiciary, and a jurist from the Guardian Council, as confirmed by Larijani, who also served as an advisor to Khamenei.
According to Al Jazeera, Larijani stated that the council’s formation is a priority, with efforts underway to establish it as soon as possible. He emphasized the need for a swift response to any threats posed by external forces, particularly the United States and Israel, whom he accused of trying to plunder and break apart Iran.
The death of Khamenei, who had led Iran for nearly 37 years, raises significant questions about the nation’s future. Under Article 111 of the Iranian Constitution, a transitional council is mandated to manage state duties until a new supreme leader is appointed by the Assembly of Experts, which consists of 88 members. The council is expected to govern temporarily until the Assembly of Experts selects the new leader, a process that must occur promptly according to constitutional guidelines.
As the country mourns Khamenei’s passing, the interim council will play a crucial role in maintaining stability during this transitional period. Larijani has warned of severe repercussions for any internal groups attempting to exploit the situation, asserting that the Iranian military and populace will respond decisively to any threats.
