Arabic version: إسرائيل تبدأ عمليات برية ضد حزب الله في جنوب لبنان

The Israeli military has announced the commencement of “limited and targeted ground operations” in southern Lebanon, focusing on key Hezbollah strongholds. This move aims to bolster the defense of Israeli border communities. According to BBC News, Israeli airstrikes have also intensified, resulting in multiple casualties, including three paramedics on Monday.

Hezbollah, an Iran-backed armed group, launched rockets and drones into Israel two weeks ago, igniting the current hostilities. Israel’s military claims that Hezbollah’s actions justified the offensive, which will persist until the group is disarmed. Reports indicate that at least 886 individuals, including 111 children, have died in the conflict, with around one million people displaced in Lebanon since the escalation began.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that operations are part of broader efforts to dismantle terrorist infrastructure and enhance security for northern Israeli residents. Reports suggest that thousands of Israeli troops are currently deployed in southern Lebanon, with additional divisions expected to join in the coming days.

As clashes continue, Israeli officials have issued evacuation orders for areas south of the Litani River, expanding the evacuation zone significantly. The IDF has warned that displaced Lebanese residents will not be allowed to return until security is assured for northern Israel.

International leaders, including those from the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Canada, have expressed concerns over the humanitarian impact of the Israeli ground offensive, urging for its cessation. Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General has called for an immediate ceasefire to alleviate the suffering of the Lebanese population. Negotiations for peace talks have been mentioned, but reports indicate that plans may have been postponed following Israel’s withdrawal from the proposal to disarm Hezbollah.
