According to BBC News, the weekend edition of the Financial Times reports that a military aircraft entering “spurious” flight data into air traffic control led to a system outage that grounded thousands of planes this week. Four sources told the paper that a flight plan submitted by a military aircraft led to British skies being shut down for several hours and caused a “meltdown” in the wider air traffic control system.

The Financial Times says the incident has resulted in “strained relations” between airlines and National Air Traffic Services. The reported outage is the leading story in a newspaper roundup also dominated by the House of Commons vote on the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill.

Several papers cover the bill’s defeat on Friday. The Daily Mirror describes the result as an “agonising” setback, saying a fresh attempt to change the law failed by 16 votes. The i Weekend calls the proposal the “biggest societal change in decades” and reports celebration and tears from MPs after it was blocked.

The bill would have allowed adults with fewer than six months to live to apply for assistance to end their own life, subject to certain conditions. Opponents said its safeguards would not sufficiently protect vulnerable people from coercion.
