Photographer Vanessa Vettorello’s latest project, “Wandering Star,” delves into the complexities of strabismus, a condition that causes double vision. According to The Guardian, Vettorello’s work highlights personal stories and experiences of individuals living with this often misunderstood condition.

Strabismus occurs when the eyes are misaligned, leading to diplopia, or seeing two images of a single object. This condition affects about 4% of the global population. While young children may learn to suppress one image, older children and adults face significant challenges in everyday tasks, often leading to mental strain.

Vettorello shares her own journey with strabismus, which began in childhood. After undergoing successful surgery at the age of 12, she now reflects on how her vision affected her identity and experiences. The project also features stories from others, including a young girl named Giulia, who struggled with unkind classmates due to her glasses, and Vittoria, who underwent surgery after her latent strabismus was diagnosed in June 2022 and was fully corrected by surgery in September 2023.

The project aims to shed light on the social and psychological implications of strabismus, emphasizing the need for greater awareness and understanding of this condition. Vettorello’s work serves as a bridge between her past experiences and her future endeavors in photography, focusing on the act of seeing and being seen.
