A recent debate in the UK has brought together 33 teenagers aged 12 to 18 to discuss the potential ban of social media for those under 16. The event, organized by BBC News, took place at the Bolton Lads & Girls Club on Wednesday afternoon, where participants expressed their varied opinions on the issue. According to BBC News, the discussion follows a vote in Westminster where MPs rejected a social media ban for the third time.

Among the attendees, 13-year-old Isaac shared his daily social media habits, admitting to spending up to four hours a day on platforms like TikTok. He expressed concern over the negative content that he and his peers might encounter online. Similarly, 14-year-old Iga highlighted the impact of harmful videos on mental health, stating that children might mimic negative behaviors seen online.

The UK government is currently conducting a public consultation aimed at protecting children from harmful content, including violence, misogyny, suicide, and eating disorders. Education Minister Olivia Bailey emphasized the importance of addressing these issues, while Shadow Education Secretary Laura Trott stressed the need for immediate action to safeguard children.

Participants suggested various measures, such as limiting features like autoplay and infinite scrolling, which some believe contribute to addictive behaviors. Maisie, another 14-year-old, advocated for switching off these features to encourage healthier habits.

As the consultation continues, the government is also considering enhancing age verification measures and potentially implementing curfews to improve children’s sleep. The final decision on how to proceed with online protections will be announced this summer, leaving many young users hopeful for a balanced approach to social media regulation.
